In the wide open spaces of the Alto do Paranapanema, silence and prayer

Abadia de Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz Abbey) is a Cistercian monastery located in Itaporanga, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1936 by Dom Atanásio Merkle and a group of monks from Himmerod Abbey in Germany, it became an abbey in 1950. About twenty Cistercian monks live there today according to the Rule of Saint Benedict, a simple and fraternal life shaped by the Divine Office, alternating Gregorian-Cistercian chant in Latin and psalms in Portuguese, as well as agricultural work and livestock farming in the spirit of "Ora et Labora."

Surrounded by the wide open landscapes of the Alto do Paranapanema, about 350 kilometers from São Paulo, the abbey offers a secluded and peaceful setting, conducive to silence and recollection, while remaining close to the services of the town. People come here for a spiritual retreat, inner guidance, or simply a break from the ordinary rhythm of life.
