On a ridge of the Crete Senesi, seven centuries of prayer

The Abbazia di Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, in the province of Siena at the heart of the Crete Senesi, is the mother house of the Olivetan Benedictine Congregation, in Tuscany. Founded in the early 14th century by San Bernardo Tolomei, who withdrew into the desert of Acona to live according to the Rule of Saint Benedict, it officially became an abbey through the charta fundationis of March 26, 1319. About thirty monks have lived there without interruption for more than seven centuries, following the daily rhythm of communal liturgical prayer and work.

The vast complex stretches along a hilltop ridge, amid a landscape of clay hills, vineyards, olive groves, and woodland. A place of great spiritual, artistic, and historical significance, the abbey welcomes men, women, and groups for a Christian spiritual retreat, in keeping with the centuries-old tradition of Benedictine hospitality. Guests may, if they wish, share in this rhythm and participate in the liturgy celebrated with the community.
