Aiguebelle Abbey
Montjoyer Drôme Founded in 1137
At the confluence of waters, nine centuries of silence
Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Aiguebelle, located in the Drôme Provençale region of southern France, is a Cistercian monastery run by Trappist monks. Built in 1137 at the confluence of three streams, it takes its name from the French for "beautiful water." The community, which today numbers fifteen monks ranging in age from fifty-three to ninety-nine, belongs to the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance. Living in the silence that fosters contemplation, the brothers gather in the church seven times a day to pray and sing the praise of God, and seek to live by the work of their hands.
Nestled at the top of a valley with beautiful views, on the border between Dauphiné and Provence, the monastery welcomes anyone seeking silence and renewal. Guests come to rest and make a spiritual retreat, in a peaceful natural setting conducive to prayer and recollection.
