Carmel d'Angers
Angers Maine-et-Loire Founded in 1626
In the heart of Angers, a school of contemplative prayer
The Carmel d'Angers, in Maine-et-Loire, is a monastery of Discalced Carmelite nuns located in the heart of the historic city center, a few minutes from the Château d'Angers. Founded in 1626 and reborn in 1850 thanks to Carmelite sisters who came from Cahors, the community today numbers seventeen sisters. Their life is organized around two periods of contemplative prayer each day, Mass, and the liturgical offices, in an atmosphere of silence, prayer, and fraternity inherited from Saint Teresa of Ávila. The sisters support themselves, in part through the making of unconsecrated hosts.
A true haven of peace in the middle of the city, the Carmel welcomes retreatants who wish to deepen their faith, discern a vocation, or simply take a break. This urban setting allows guests to combine the calm of the monastery with the cultural richness of Angers, from the banks of the Maine to its medieval heritage.
