Taking time to listen and discern

The Carmel of Christ the King in Saint-Sever, in the Landes, is a Carmelite monastery nestled at the top of a small green hill in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Founded on October 27, 1931, by Mother Anne de Jésus, the community lives in fidelity to the spirit of Saint Teresa of Ávila: liturgical prayer, personal mental prayer, and moments of fraternal encounter mark the rhythm of the sisters' days, in an atmosphere of charity, joy, and spiritual freedom.

Surrounded by meadows, woodland, a small pond, and both wild and domestic animals, the hill offers a wide space for walking and a climate of solitude that supports contemplative life. The sisters welcome young women who wish to discover monastic life: several times a year, sessions allow visitors to meet the sisters and share their daily life over a weekend. The abbey church of Saint-Sever, a UNESCO-listed monument, is a five-minute walk away.
