Carmelite Monastery of Broussey
Rions Gironde Founded in 1839
South of Bordeaux, on the banks of the Garonne and surrounded by vineyards, the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites of Broussey is home to a community of the Discalced Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the male branch of the Carmel reformed in the 16th century by Saint Teresa of Ávila. Founded in 1839 by Father Dominique de Saint-Joseph, this Saint Joseph Convent is the place where the male order of Carmel was restored in France after the Revolution. The thirteen brothers lead a life rooted in contemplative prayer and fraternal community life, combining hospitality, spiritual guidance, and service in local pastoral ministry.
Located 40 km southeast of Bordeaux and easily accessible by car, the monastery has welcomed those seeking a spiritual pause since 1960, whether for a weekend or a week. Its renovated buildings offer an ideal setting for renewal, surrounded by vineyards, forests, and remarkable bastide towns such as Cadillac, Créon, and Sauveterre-de-Guyenne.
