Sainte-Claire de Montfavet Monastery
Avignon Vaucluse Founded in 1941
Sainte-Claire de Montfavet Monastery, in the suburbs of Avignon (Vaucluse), is home to a community of contemplative Poor Clares, heirs to the former Verdière estate entrusted to the Poor Clare Sisters of Nice-Cimiez in 1941. Dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles, the monastery today welcomes fourteen sisters and a chaplain, ranging in age from 35 to 91, who live in simplicity and fraternity. Their day alternates between liturgical prayers and daily tasks (maintenance, sewing, laundry, cooking, hospitality, a small religious goods shop), from Lauds at dawn to Compline in the evening.
Bucolic and steeped in serenity, this peaceful setting is ideal for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual renewal. The sisters welcome visitors in a neighborhood bordered by the Canal Crillon and the Durance river, 7 km from Avignon and its Palace of the Popes.
