Sanctuaire Notre-Dame du Chêne
Vion Sarthe Founded in 1494
In the heart of the Sarthe, in the commune of Vion near Sablé-sur-Sarthe, the Sanctuaire Notre-Dame du Chêne has been a pilgrimage site since 1494 and a spiritual center led by the Brothers of Saint John. Ten brothers and priests live there according to three guiding principles: prayer, hospitality, and ecology. They oversee the liturgy at the basilica, lead sessions and retreats, and serve the surrounding parishes. Community life, often shared with guests, is complemented by permaculture gardens and training programs on integral ecology.
Set in open countryside at the borders of Sarthe, Mayenne, and Maine-et-Loire, the sanctuary is 40 km from Le Mans and Angers, and five kilometers from Solesmes Abbey. Visitors can come for a few days of personal renewal or join a themed session. Students, retreatants, and wwoofers are all welcome in this peaceful, green setting, ideal for walks.
