Abbaye de Cîteaux
St-Nicolas-lès-Cîteaux Côte-d'Or Founded in 1098
At the cradle of the Cistercian order, among the vineyards of Burgundy
Abbaye Notre-Dame de Cîteaux, in Burgundy, is the birthplace of the Cistercian Order: founded in 1098 by Robert de Molesmes, it is home today to a community of thirty-five brothers. Nestled on a hillside in the heart of the Saône plain, surrounded by vineyards and fields, thirty minutes from Dijon and Beaune, it carries on a great monastic tradition shaped by the Divine Office, times of silence, and work.
The monks welcome men and women for stays of two to seven days, offering a setting of peace and prayer open to all, regardless of belief. Guests come to pursue a search for God or simply to find rest and quiet, and to disconnect within a remarkable natural and historical heritage. The abbey also offers a guided tour open to the public and a shop where the famous Fromage de Cîteaux can be found.
