Argentan Abbey of Our Lady
Argentan Orne Founded in 1066
Argentan Abbey of Our Lady, located in the Suisse normande region of Normandy, is one of the oldest women's abbeys in France: its origins trace back to the Merovingian era and Saint Opportuna. After many trials, including the bombings of 1944, the contemplative Benedictine nuns resettled in Argentan in 1958 in newly built quarters. The community, which today numbers thirty-two nuns, organizes its life around prayer (Mass, seven daytime offices and one night office, sung in Gregorian chant), fraternal life, and work: a farm, orchards, a vegetable garden, and a screen-printing workshop.
Throughout the year, the Benedictines welcome women retreatants to share in their prayerful and industrious life, in a spirit of family and recollection. Three sanctuaries are nearby, in Lisieux, Alençon, and Montligeon, as well as the Haras du Pin for those interested in tourism.

The day begins at 6:00 a.m. with Lauds and ends at 9:30 p.m. with Vigils. Participation in the daily Mass is at the heart of the stay; attending one or two offices is encouraged. The guest mistress introduces those who wish to the liturgy of the chanted offices in Gregorian chant.
Spiritual guidance
Retreatants may receive spiritual guidance from a Sister or meet occasionally with a priest, according to their wishes. Teaching given by a nun is also possible.
