Carmel d'Angers

In the heart of Angers, in Maine-et-Loire, the Carmelite sisters welcome you to experience a spiritual retreat in an atmosphere of silence, prayer, and fellowship. Located just a few minutes' walk from the Château d'Angers, the Carmel offers a true haven of peace within the city. Whether you wish to deepen your faith, discern a vocation, or simply take a break from daily life, this Christian retreat in Angers allows you to find renewal in the spiritual tradition of the Carmel.

History of Carmel d'Angers

The history of the Carmel traces its origins to the 12th century, when hermits settled on Mount Carmel, in the Holy Land, to live in the footsteps of Christ under the protection of the Virgin Mary. Inspired by the Bible and the figure of the prophet Elijah, they received in 1207 a rule of life that remains to this day at the heart of Carmelite spirituality.

In the 16th century, Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross undertook a reform of the Carmel in order to recover the radical spirit of its origins. Their spiritual vision spread widely across Europe and led to the founding of many monasteries.

Carmel d'Angers was founded in 1626. Despite the trials of the French Revolution, which led to the expulsion of the sisters and the dispersal of the community, the monastery was reborn in 1850 with the arrival of Carmelite sisters from Cahors. The community then repurchased the historic buildings, in which it still resides today.

This long history makes Carmel d'Angers a place marked by several centuries of prayer, faithfulness, and hospitality.

The community of Carmelite sisters of Angers

The community today numbers seventeen Discalced Carmelite sisters. Their vocation is to live a life of prayer, silence, and fellowship in the service of the Church and the world.

The day is organized around two periods of mental prayer, a form of silent, personal prayer that holds a central place in Carmelite spirituality. The sisters also gather several times a day for Mass and the liturgical offices.

In an atmosphere of recollection, each sister seeks to deepen her relationship with God while participating in community life. The sisters also provide for their livelihood through their work, notably through the making of hosts.

Fraternal life is nurtured through daily gatherings, in the spirit of Saint Teresa of Ávila, who invited the sisters to live in friendship and mutual support.
