Abadia de Santa Maria

São Paulo Founded in 1976

Benedictines Nuns

Abadia de Santa Maria is a Benedictine nuns' abbey located in the northern area of São Paulo, at the foot of the Serra da Cantareira, in Brazil. Founded on November 24, 1911, it is the first Benedictine nuns' monastery in the country. Its foundress, Gertrudes Cecília da Silva Prado, had been formed at Stanbrook Abbey in England. The community moved to its current address on Avenida Coronel Sezefredo Fagundes in 1976.

The abbey has founded monasteries in Buenos Aires, Belo Horizonte, Juiz de Fora, and Itapecerica da Serra. The nuns celebrate Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours each day. They welcome individual and group retreats and operate a shop.
