Abadia N. Sra. d'Assunçâo de Hardehausen-Itatinga

Itatinga Founded in 1941

Abadia Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Hardehausen-Itatinga is an abbey of Cistercian monks (Cistercian Order) in Itatinga, in the state of São Paulo (Brazil). It continues the legacy of the German abbey of Hardehausen: a first monk left for Brazil in 1939, and the rest of the community joined him in Itatinga in 1941. The canonical rights of Hardehausen were transferred to the Brazilian monastery.

The abbey church was inaugurated in 1954 under Abbot Dom Afonso Heun. The abbey belongs to the Brazilian congregation of the Cistercian Order and reports directly to the Abbot General. It is currently led by an administrator prior.
