Abadia Sao Geraldo
São Paulo Founded in 1963
Abadia São Geraldo is a community of Benedictine monks belonging to the Hungarian congregation, founded by monks from the archabbey of Pannonhalma. The first monks arrived in São Paulo in the 1930s to minister to the Hungarian colony. Established in 1951 in the Santa Cecília neighborhood, where it founded the Colégio Santo Américo, the community became a conventual priory in 1953, then relocated in 1963 to the Morumbi neighborhood in São Paulo, Brazil. It has been an abbey since 1989.
The monks celebrate the Divine Office each day, and the weekday Mass is sung in Gregorian chant. The abbey also runs a parish, social outreach works, and an oblate fraternity. In 1992, it founded the Cela São José in Itapecerica da Serra, a place of contemplative life with a guest house.
