The Charterhouse of Santa María de Miraflores is located three kilometers east of Burgos, on the edge of the Fuentes Blancas park. In 1442, King John II of Castile gave the Carthusians the hunting lodge built by his father in 1401. After a fire, the architect Juan de Colonia designed the church and monastery starting in 1454, completed in 1488 under Isabella the Catholic.

The Gothic church houses the tomb of John II and Isabella of Portugal, as well as that of the Infante Alfonso. The monks were forced to leave during the Napoleonic occupation, and again in 1835 with the suppression of religious orders. In 1880, the monastery was returned to the Carthusian order, and a community has lived there ever since.

The enclosure, with cells arranged around two cloisters, is not open to visitors. The church and part of the monastery are open daily to visitors, without a guide. On Sundays and feast days, a Mass open to the faithful is celebrated before visiting hours begin.
