Cartuxa Nossa Senhora Medianeira

Ivorá Founded in 1984

Monks

The charterhouse Nossa Senhora Medianeira is located in Ivorá, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, in the diocese of Santa Maria. It belongs to the Carthusian order and is the first charterhouse in Latin America.

In the 1980s, the bishop of Santa Maria, Bishop Ivo Lorscheiter, learned that Brazilian vocations to the charterhouse were multiplying and asked the order to establish a foundation. The General Chapter of 1983, the year of the order's ninth centenary, accepted the project. The land, detached from the Granja Medianeira, was offered by the diocese, and the foundation began on November 21, 1984, in a temporary building. Construction of the monastery was completed around 2000.

The monks, fathers and brothers, follow the schedule common to all charterhouses. The night office begins at midnight, the conventual Mass takes place in the morning, and most of the day is spent in the cell, between prayer, study, and work.
