Monasterio de San Salvador de Palacios de Benaver

Isar

Benedictines Nuns

The Monasterio de San Salvador is home to a community of Benedictine nuns in Palacios de Benaver, a village in the municipality of Isar, about twenty kilometers from Burgos (Castille-et-León, Spain). It is one of the oldest women's monasteries in Spain: the earliest document mentioning it dates from 1231. The 13th-century Gothic church preserves the tombs of the Manrique family and a large crucifix.

The nuns run a guest house and follow the Liturgy of the Hours, from the Office of Readings to Compline. In 2025 and then in August 2026, the Abbess announced that the community would join, along with the community from Zamora, the monastery of San Pelayo in Oviedo. No departure date has been set.
