Benedictines Nuns
Mosteiro da Virgem is an abbey of Benedictine nuns located in the center of Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The community was born in Rome around Madre Francisca de Jesus, who founded the Companhia da Virgem there in 1925. It settled in Petrópolis in 1937, joined the Benedictine family in 1967, and made profession according to the Rule of Saint Benedict in 1969. The monastery was erected as an abbey in 1980.
The nuns celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours seven times a day. Their guest house welcomes retreats and days of prayer. Since 1939, the sisters have made the Bricelet, a type of biscuit. The abbey has founded the monasteries of São Mateus (Espírito Santo) and Guajará-Mirim (Rondônia).
