Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora do Monserrate

Salvador Founded in 1598

Benedictines

The Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora do Monserrate is a small Benedictine house dependent on the archabbey of São Bento da Bahia, on the Humaitá point of the Itapagipe peninsula, in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil). The sanctuary, founded around 1580, was given to the Benedictines in 1598. The small adjoining monastery was built between 1650 and 1679.

The church preserves a collection of 17th-century azulejos and an 18th-century gilded wooden high altar from the monastery of São Bento. It is open several days a week, and Mass is celebrated there on Sunday mornings. The monks of Salvador provide the religious services of the site.
