The Mosteiro de São Bento do Rio de Janeiro is an abbey of Benedictine monks of the Brazilian congregation, located on the Morro de São Bento in the center of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Monks from Bahia received a plot of land with a chapel there in 1590. The abbey church, built from 1633 to 1671, and the cloister, completed in 1755, form one of the country's most significant examples of colonial art.
The church is open every day. The conventual Mass on Sundays is sung in Gregorian chant, and the community celebrates the Divine Office from morning to evening. The monastery is home to the Colégio de São Bento, the Faculdade de São Bento, the Lumen Christi publishing house, and the Casa de Emaús, a guest house for retreats, meetings, and times of silence.
