Benedictines Nuns
The Mosteiro de São João is a monastery of Benedictine nuns located in the Abernéssia neighborhood of Campos do Jordão, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. It was founded in 1964 by Mother Margarida Hertel and seventeen nuns from the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Glória in Uberaba. That community had itself arrived in Brazil in 1948 from a Benedictine monastery in Denmark.
Visitors may attend the nuns' Office, sung in Gregorian chant. The Casa Santa Scholástica welcomes primarily priests, religious, and committed lay people for retreats or study weeks; guests may join the community for prayer. The monastery has a shop selling handcrafted products (cookies, breads, jams) and a café kiosk.
