Sainte-Claire de Vermand Monastery
VermandAisne Founded in 1985
A community of Poor Clare Sisters in Vermand, founded in 1985 in the countryside, ten kilometers from Saint-Quentin, by the monastery of Tinqueux-Cormontreuil, in response to the call of the bishop of Soissons (Aisne). We are currently 6 sisters. We seek to return more deeply to the sources of our founders, Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi: the joy of the Gospel, simplicity, providence, fraternity, closeness to people and to nature.
While the adventure began in a very small brick house, over the years we have expanded the space of our tent with the construction of a chapel, more suitable community buildings, and the development of a park. A guest house also came into being to allow people to settle in and experience Franciscan simplicity for a few hours or a few days.
For centuries, men and women have sung or recited the Divine Office. This is our primary mission. Praise and intercession unfold in the beauty of the liturgy, and anyone is welcome to come and pray with us. The chapel is open to all.
Our days are shaped by prayer, work, and fraternal life in an atmosphere of silence and recollection.
Throughout the year, personal and community times are planned: formation, renewal, fraternal and spiritual sharing, relaxation, celebrations...
Community life is enriched by the complementary gifts and creativity of each sister. It is always in search of balance, harmony, unity... "Not perfect, but happy."
The Poor Clares follow the Form of Life of Saint Clare. As members of the mendicant orders, they receive the essentials of their daily sustenance from others. We are witnesses and beneficiaries of this still today!
