Visitation Monastery in Moulins

MoulinsAllier

Visitandines Nuns

The third monastery of the Order, founded in 1616 by Mother Jeanne-Charlotte de Bréchard, this Visitation Monastery in Moulins is where Saint Jane de Chantal died on December 13, 1641. Dispersed in 1792, it was not until 1876 that the Bishop called for a new Visitation community in the city. The Visitandines were unable to return to the original site, so they built a new one. The spirit of the Foundress remains very much alive, however: a spirit of gentleness and humility, virtues dear to the Heart of Jesus.

The Order of the Visitation takes its name from the Gospel mystery of the Visitation of Mary (Luke 1:39-56). This mystery is marked by encounter and charity. Under papal enclosure, the Visitandines live out the hidden character of Jesus's childhood. Founded spiritually on the Mount of Calvary: "Our little Congregation is a work of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The dying Savior brought us forth through the opening of His Sacred Heart" (Saint Francis de Sales).

– The vocation of this Monastery is to pray for priests and for the Church, to be a "little wellspring" at the service of priestly vocation.
– To perpetuate the memory of Saint Jane de Chantal in Moulins.
– The Visitation Museum, created in 1991 to preserve and promote the artistic and religious heritage of the monasteries of the Order of the Visitation.
