Writing icons: a path to oneself, a path to God
No drawing skills necessary.
Illumination captivates and fascinates, it speaks to us, even when we are not its creator.
Reproducing a historical illumination allows its symbolism to express itself, to touch and transform us.
Illumination has enabled a "complete" reading of the text, with an evocative power that nourishes the mind.
The art of illumination requires attention to each gesture. We are thus brought back to the present moment, more available to listen to what is essential. The application of gold and pigments draws on knowledge that dates back to the Middle Ages.
The instructor will guide you in your creation by transmitting these traditional skills.
Retreat open to young people and adults.
The focus of this course is essentially traditional.
- The materials used are often historical.
- The parchment, the classic support for medieval manuscripts, is prepared to receive the drawing and pigments.
- The gold leaf is then applied, and burnished in certain cases.
- The pigments are bound with a tempera based on gum arabic.
- The techniques for applying colors vary depending on the period of the illumination being used as a model.
Those who wish can let themselves be guided by their inspiration... So many paths to explore.
And a wealth of images from which to draw those that suit us best.
The workshop begins, for those who are able, on Monday, June 1 at 4:00 PM, with a short walk in the Provençal countryside surrounding the abbey.
During the following three days:
- You will work on illumination from 9:15 AM to 12:15 PM and from 2:15 PM to 5:45 PM. These workshop sessions take place in silence and the greatest calm.
- Conversation is welcome during breaks and meals.
- Each day, we will participate in a divine office.
- We will also take time to meet with the Cistercian sisters.
Illumination practice with Anne Demoustier: reproduction of historical illuminations, with the possibility of personal interpretation. Opportunity to participate in the offices and to meet with a Sister from the community.
Illumination
Materials needed for illumination:
- 1 Kolinsky sable brush (e.g., Da Vinci no. 3 series 36)
- 2 basic synthetic brushes no. 2
- HB pencil
- white eraser
- tape
- cloth
- scissors
- tracing paper
- ruler
- water jar
- blotting paper
- palette with wells
- some sheets of transfer gold leaf
- watercolor paper, satin or fine grain, 300g/m² (or goat parchment).
Pigments for painting are provided.
Guest house
- For your stay at the guest house, we would be grateful if you could bring your own towels (and sheets if possible).
- For specific needs, please contact the guest mistress.
- Our facilities are accessible for people with reduced mobility.
