History of Santa María de Carbajal Monastery in León
The community traces its origins to the martyrdom of Saint Pelagius, a young Christian who died in 925 in Córdoba for refusing to renounce his faith. In 966, his relics were transferred to León at the initiative of the royal family. A monastery was then founded to receive them: Santa María de Carbajal, the cradle of the present community.
Over the centuries, the community underwent several relocations:
- In 995, the nuns left León in the face of the threat posed by Almanzor
- In 1148, they settled in Carbajal de la Legua for more than 450 years
- In 1600, they returned permanently to León.
