At the gates of Périgueux, a thousand-year-old abbey coming back to life
A few kilometers from Périgueux, the abbey of Notre-Dame de Chancelade is a place steeped in nearly a thousand years of history. Its name is thought to derive from the Latin fons cancellatus, meaning "the hidden spring" or "the protected spring": it was around this spring that hermits settled as early as the 11th century, soon forming a community under the Rule of Saint Augustine.
After centuries of eventful history, the abbey found new momentum in the 17th century through the efforts of Blessed Alain de Solminihac, who restored the buildings and profoundly reformed the community before becoming bishop of Cahors. After the interruption of religious life during the Revolution, the Canons Regular of Saint Victor returned to Chancelade at the end of the 20th century to revive this ancient spiritual wellspring of the Périgord.
Today, the canons lead a life that is both communal and apostolic, shaped by prayer, liturgy, and their various pastoral missions. They welcome those who wish to take a break, deepen their faith, participate in a retreat, or simply spend a few days in prayer and renewal in the calm of the abbey.
