Illumination workshop
Let yourself be guided by your inspiration
No drawing experience required.
The orientation of this course is essentially traditional. The materials used are often historical. Parchment, the classic support of the medieval manuscript, is prepared to receive the drawing and pigments. Gold leaf is then applied, and burnished in some cases. The pigments are bound with a tempera made from gum arabic. The techniques for applying colors vary according to the period of the illumination used as a model. Those who wish may let themselves be guided by their inspiration...
So many avenues to explore. And a wealth of images from which to draw those that will resonate with us most.
Illumination captivates and fascinates; it speaks to us, even when we are not its creator. Reproducing a historical illumination allows its symbolism to be expressed, to touch and transform us.
Illumination has enabled an "integral" reading of the text, with an evocative power that nourishes the mind.
The art of illumination calls for careful attention to every gesture. We are thus brought back to the present moment, more open to listening to what is essential. The application of gold and pigments draws on knowledge that dates back to the Middle Ages. The instructor will guide you in your work, passing on these traditional skills.
Programme
The workshop begins, for those who are able, on Monday, June 1st at 4:00 p.m., with a short walk through the Provençal countryside surrounding the abbey. During the following three days, you will work on your illumination from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 2:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. These workshop sessions take place in silence and the greatest calm. Exchanges are welcome during breaks and meals. Each day, we will participate in an office. We will also take time to meet the Cistercian sisters.
Illumination practice with Anne Demoustier: reproduction of historical illuminations, with the possibility of a personal interpretation.
Possibility of participating in the offices and meeting a Sister from the community.
