Writing icons: a path to oneself, a path to God
No drawing skills are necessary.
Illumination captivates and fascinates, it speaks to us even when we are not its creator.
Reproducing a historical illumination allows its symbolism to express itself, to touch us and transform us.
Illumination has enabled a "complete" reading of the text, with an evocative power that nourishes the mind.
The art of illumination requires attention to each gesture. We are thus brought back to the present moment, more available to listen to what is essential. The application of gold and pigments draws on knowledge dating back to the Middle Ages.
The instructor will guide you in your work by passing on these traditional skills.
Retreat open to young people and adults.
The focus of this course is essentially traditional.
- The materials used are often historical.
- The parchment, the classic medium for medieval manuscripts, is prepared to receive the drawing and pigments.
- The gold leaf is then applied and burnished in some cases.
- The pigments are bound with a tempera based on gum arabic.
- The techniques for applying colors vary depending on the period of the illumination that serves as a model.
Those who wish can let themselves be guided by their inspiration... So many paths to explore.
And a treasure trove of images from which to draw those that suit us best.

The workshop begins, for those who can, on Monday, March 23 at 4:00 PM, with a short walk through the Provençal countryside surrounding the abbey.
During the following three days:
- You will work on illumination from 9:15 AM to 12:15 PM and from 2:15 PM to 5:45 PM. These workshop sessions take place in silence and the utmost calm.
- Exchanges are welcome during breaks and meals.
- Each day, we will participate in a liturgical office.
- We will also take time to meet with the Cistercian sisters.
Illumination practice with Anne Demoustier: reproduction of historical illuminations, with the possibility of personal interpretation. Opportunity to participate in the divine office and to meet with a Sister from the community.
