Retreats organized by the community
A Cistercian haven of peace in the heart of Tuscany
Nestled in the heart of Tuscany's enchanting landscapes, between the historic province of Pisa and the diocese of Volterra, stands the monastery of Valserena. This sanctuary of peace is home to a vibrant community of approximately 40 sisters of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance, more commonly known as Trappists.
At Valserena, every moment is imbued with the timeless wisdom of the Rule of Saint Benedict, perpetuating a centuries-old monastic tradition rooted in the spiritual heritage of Cîteaux and Saint Bernard. The sisters of Valserena lead a life of profound contemplation, entirely dedicated to prayer and silence, within the monastic enclosure that ensures the serenity and intimacy of their spiritual journey.
The monastery is not a place closed in on itself. Its welcoming guest house opens wide its doors to welcome individuals or groups wishing to immerse themselves in monastic prayer and establish a privileged contact with the community. It is a place of authentic hospitality, where silence becomes a universal language, inviting everyone to listen to the voice of God.

Valserena: a modern monastery rooted in tradition
Valserena is the first foundation of the monastery of Our Lady of Saint Joseph of Vitorchiano, not far from Rome, which, starting in the post-conciliar years, gave birth to numerous communities spread throughout the world.
Construction of the monastery and guest house buildings began in 1967. The architectural lines are simple and modern: among the olive-covered hills emerges the roof of the church which, like a tent, recalls the presence of God in human history. The nuns' property extends over approximately 50 hectares of land, largely covered with woods.
From the beginning, an activity was also launched to ensure the material sustenance of the community: since 1968, a cosmetics workshop has produced soaps, perfumes and creams for personal care. Extra virgin olive oil and handmade liqueurs are also produced.

What to expect during your stay
Valserena's guest house, an open door to contemplation
The community makes the guest house facilities available for groups and individuals who wish to spend time in spiritual retreats or study independently. Those who wish can meet a sister in the parlor or request to organize for their group a moment of witness with a member of the monastic community.
The community offers short retreats for young women during Lent and Advent, while during the summer period, a week of sharing is planned to get to know the sisters' life, with the possibility of participating not only in prayer but also in manual work within the enclosure.
The stay at the monastery is reserved for those who want to have a retreat experience. The community does not welcome passing tourists or people who intend to be accommodated for other purposes. Guests are asked to participate in the Eucharistic liturgy and at least a good part of the Liturgy of the Hours.
