Christian history and heritage of the priory

The history and architecture of the small hamlet of Rimont, belonging to the municipality of Fley (Saône-et-Loire), have been marked by the presence of religious since the 12th century, with the arrival in 1113 of Cistercian monks who founded the site.

In 1871, a small seminary opened its doors in Rimont, allowing many adolescents, some aspiring to the priesthood, to continue their education there until its closure in 1978.

The arrival of the Brothers of Saint John in 1982 breathed new life into the imposing building, which has now become the mother house of their Congregation as well as the theological formation house of the Saint John Family.

Two years later, the Apostolic Sisters of Saint John in turn founded a priory in Rimont to begin their theological studies alongside the Brothers, before being sent on mission to other houses of the Congregation.

Brief history of the Saint John congregation

The Congregation of the Apostolic Sisters of Saint John is an international religious life institute founded in France in 1984. This apostolic community, of conventual life, lives in the footsteps of Jesus, under the patronage of the apostle Saint John.

Their life unfolds according to four pillars: the life of prayer, fraternal life, apostolic life and the life of studies. In Rimont, about ten sisters of different nationalities share a life of prayer, fraternal communion and formation.

Their daily routine includes:

  • communal and liturgical prayer (Liturgy of the Hours offices, Mass, mental prayer, a time of silent and personal prayer, and adoration);
  • fraternal life (community meals, fraternal gatherings and house services);
  • theological studies, with the Brothers in Rimont and in Lyon;
  • various apostolic missions entrusted to the community in Rimont and the surrounding area.
